SAO PAULO: Three-time defending Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen said Thursday he doesn’t care about criticism of his racing tactics at the Mexico City Grand Prix last weekend.

The Red Bull driver saw his championship lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris decrease to 47 points after a race in which he received two 10-second time penalties — one for forcing Norris off the track, and a short time later for gaining position when he left the track.

Verstappen spoke ahead of this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

“It is my 10th year in F1. I know what I am doing,” Verstappen said in a press conference at the Sao Paulo track. “I like to win. I don’t like to lose. I think not many people like to lose. I just tried to maximize the result and, like I said, some you win, some you lose.”

After Sunday’s race, won by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, the FIA also handed Verstappen two penalty points, bringing his total to six for a 12-month period.

Verstappen has 362 points in the drivers’ championship with four races and two sprint races to go, while Norris has 315. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has a more distant shot at the title. He currently has 291 points.

Asked about criticism from 1996 F1 champion Damon Hill, who considered Verstappen to be too aggressive, the Dutchman responded: “I don’t listen to those individuals. I just do my thing. I’m a three-time world champion.”

Verstappen said he takes advice on his racing from “people who are close” and “with a good heart.” He denied that one of those is three-time F1 champion Nelson Piquet.

Later, Norris told journalists at Interlagos that Verstappen “deep down” knows he made mistakes in Mexico.

“I still have a lot of respect for Max and everything he does. Not respect for what he did last weekend, but I have respect for him as a person and for what he has achieved,” the McLaren driver said. “It is not for me to speak to him. I am not his teacher, his mentor or anything like that.”

Norris also said “Max knows what he has to do” about the incidents in Mexico.

“He knows that he did wrong, deep down he does. And that’s for him to change, not for me,” the British driver said.

Mercedes driver George Russell, who is one of the directors of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, said a post-race meeting in Mexico turned out to be positive despite the differences between Verstappen and Norris. He also agreed that the actions of the Dutchman should have been punished as they were.

“If you read the rules, there are lines that say if you’re driving erratically or dangerously, you’ll be punished,” Russell said. “You can argue that if a driver outranks himself and doesn’t make the corner on the exit, that is erratic because you’re driving off the racetrack. So there is an element of interpretation that for sure just needs to be cleaned up.”

Verstappen said in his press conference that F1 is probably over-regulated.

“The rulebook is only getting bigger and bigger every single year,” the three-time champion said. “I don’t think that’s always the right way forward.”

JEDDAH: Fans at the Jeddah E-Prix were given the opportunity to meet some of motorsport’s biggest stars in person on Friday in a pit-lane walk and autograph session.
Some 21 superstar drivers were featured at the autograph session, all taking time out of their busy schedules to meet fans, have their pictures taken, and sign all kinds of memorabilia.
Hadeer Mohammed, a Saudi student who attended Jeddah’s first race of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with her friends, told Arab News that she was an enthusiast, and added: “I’m a big fan of both Formula One and Formula E and I was very happy when they announced they would host the Formula E in Jeddah.”
She said she was happy to be given the opportunity to meet the drivers, take selfies and get autographs.
She said: “I just got an autograph of Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato of Nissan.”
The Formula E drivers made themselves available at the fan zone with the teams providing photos, postcards and other goodies.
Adel Hasanain said that he arrived early in the day to interact with the motor racing icons.
He said: “It was an excellent opportunity to meet our favorite drivers. I had the chance to get a signed cap from Jake Dennis and Nico Mueller of the Andretti team, and Jean-Eric Vergne and Maximilian Guenther of DS Penske.”
Fans made the most of the opportunity to obtain autographs and take photographs.
Talal Al-Katheri, an engineering student at King Abdulaziz University, said: “It was a great moment for us today as we got the chance to meet these drivers.
“I am a fan of NEOM McLaren so I got autographs and photos of Sam Bird and Taylor Bernard.
“What a day it was, walking on the track and seeing the participating drivers up close.”

JEDDAH: Ahead of the third round of the Formula E’s season in Saudi Arabia this weekend, drivers from the teams competing in the first Jeddah E-Prix have revealed their ambitions for the doubleheader under lights.

Sam Bird of NEOM McLaren, Maximilian Guenther of DS PENSKE and Nick Cassidy of Jaguar TCS Racing spoke to Arab News recently ahead of the action taking place at Jeddah Corniche Circuit for the first time after six years of Formula E’s Saudi Arabia residency in Diriyah.

Bird, who previously managed to claim two wins in Saudi Arabia, said: “I am very motivated to get the best on the Jeddah’s track for the first time.

“I am really excited to take on the two doubleheaders in Jeddah and push for my first points with Jaguar Racing. I’ve won in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Diriyah not so long ago so can’t wait to get going here in Jeddah.”

Even though the Mexico City E-Prix in January did not go as planned for the British driver, who ended fourth, he is determined to get back on the podium on Saturday.

“We need a strong performance to stay in the fight at the top of the standings,” said Bird.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Cassidy is keen to replicate past success in Saudi Arabia.

“We have put in a lot of hard work since Mexico and hopefully we can translate that into some strong results in Jeddah,” the Jaguar driver said.

“I have happy memories of racing in Saudi Arabia for Jaguar TCS Racing, including taking my first win with the team, so it would be great to continue that.”

Germany’s Guenther, who narrowly lost the internal team duel against Jean-Eric Vergne in Mexico, commented: “I am happy with the way the team works together.

“It was only my second race with DS Penske, but I have the feeling that everything is developing very well. Now I am really looking forward to Jeddah.”

JEDDAH: The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is primed for its first double-header of the season in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Rounds 3 and 4 will take place at the iconic Jeddah Corniche Circuit on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 February.

Since 2018, the E-Prix, was hosted for six successful seasons in Diriyah, this year it has been shifted to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, renowned as the fastest street circuit in the world.

This two-day event, the third in the 17-race Formula E season, represents the seventh time Saudi Arabia has hosted a Formula E World Championship race, which includes 11 global locations.

The 11th season began with a thrilling opener in Brazil, followed by the 2nd round in Mexico on January 11. The competition has already delivered intense rivalries, particularly between reigning drivers’ champion Pascal Wehrlein and the NEOM McLaren team, which currently leads the teams’ championship standings.

Round 2 winner Oliver Rowland arrived in Jeddah and will be eager to deliver another standout performance, matching his victory last month in Mexico. The Brit’s victory lifted him into second in the Drivers’ Championship.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Beside the thrilling action during the two days, the double-header race will showcase the inclusion of Pit Boost for the first time. Cars will receive a 10 percent energy increase (3.85kWh) from a quick, 30-second 600kW re-charge in the pitlane.

Hosting up to 120 young women for its FIA Girls on Track program across race week. The day-long experience includes career talks, a Pit Lane Walk, activations in the Gaming Arena and educational partner workshops on-site, led by inspirational women from within the paddock.

The program focuses on STEM education and gender inclusivity in motorsport, engaging girls from diverse communities in host cities.

 In addition, the Rookie Free Practice session debuts ahead of the event, providing global motorsport talent a chance to showcase their abilities in the latest GEN3 Evo technology. These changes highlight Formula E and the FIA’s commitment to innovation, competition, and fan engagement as the series embarks on an exciting new chapter in Jeddah.

Formula E’s philosophy is not just to race, but also it supports communities and the environment. The championship has revealed sustainability initiatives that will be implemented during the Jeddah E-Prix 2025.

These initiatives will include innovative social and environmental projects, the most important of which are the “Girls on Track” program, and the “Formula E Fund for a Better Future” to support charities, in addition to the use of renewable energy and waste management systems.

JEDDAH: Drivers will compete on a revised version of the record-breaking Jeddah Corniche Circuit in a double-header weekend when the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship comes to Saudi Arabia this weekend.

After six successful seasons in Diriyah, the all-electric racing series will now compete on a specially adapted layout of the circuit, the fastest in the world, as the championship moves to Jeddah for the first time on Feb. 14-15. 

The newly modified three kilometer track will have 19 corners, offering a new challenge for drivers and teams as they navigate high-speed turns along the Red Sea coastline.

The Jeddah E-Prix’s circuit layout has been tailored exclusively for Formula E, featuring four new chicanes placed to enhance overtaking and show off the agility of the electric vehicles.

The track diverges from the traditional Formula 1 route just before Turn 4, before rejoining at the Turn 21/22 section. Two additional chicane complexes have been installed between Turns 25 and 26, leading into the final corner and on to the pit straight.

These modifications were completed in just 30 days, with a dedicated 120-member team working around the clock to transform the circuit.

“Delivering a brand-new track layout at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in just 30 days was an immense challenge, but one that our dedicated team of 120 track specialists tackled with incredible skill and determination,” said Angus Miller, senior track and overlay manager at Formula E.

Samer Issa-El-Khoury, managing partner of CBX, the promoter of the Jeddah E-Prix, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the project.

“Thanks to the joint efforts of CBX, the Ministry of Sport, the Saudi Automobile & Motorcycle Federation, and Formula E, we have adapted the Jeddah Corniche Circuit to create a track that will deliver thrilling electric racing for fans and drivers alike,” he said.

Formula E will also introduce Pit Boost, an innovative mid-race feature, at Jeddah’s opening race.

This new strategy element grants drivers a 10 percent energy increase (3.85kWh) via a 30-second, 600kW ultra-fast energy boost in the pitlane. The feature is designed to shake up race tactics.

Saudi Arabia is a key destination on the championship’s calendar, and the move to Jeddah aligns with its Vision 2030 strategy to develop world-class sporting events throughout the Kingdom.

DUBAI: When the Jeddah E-Prix’s double-header takes place over Feb. 14-15, few people will be as busy as Darcey Lingley — with the exception of the drivers tearing around the track, perhaps.

The director of operations at Formula E has been with the organization for about a decade and after six years of hosting the race in Diriyah, she will be overseeing the latest edition of the race at its new location at Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

As someone involved with the ABB FIA Formula E Championship from its earliest days, Lingley has had a closer look than most at just how the race-day experience, in Saudi and elsewhere, has developed in recent years.

“I’m very fortunate,” Lingley told Arab News. “I’ve seen every iteration of our Saudi Arabian events. So I was there in that very first one (2018), and I have to say, especially where we were able to race, in Diriyah, has been very special over the last few years.

“We know we’re very privileged with the location. The growth of the event, popularity, the interest, knowledge, sharing of the sport in the market, has really grown. With that has also been the investment and opportunity to bring bigger, better shows.”

She added: “It’s really led the way for a lot of our other events in terms of entertainment and how we can really bring the sport into a slightly different phase to the business. So it’s been great.”

The all-electric racing series was launched in 2014 with 10 teams competing against each other in 11 races across 10 locations. In the ongoing 2024-25 campaign, Formula E’s 11th season, 11 teams are taking part in 17 races in 11 different countries.

In that time, Lingley has seen how fan engagement has grown across the growing number of events.

“I think, from a fan’s perspective, what we’ve seen is just knowledge growth in the market,” she said.

“In many of our events, people are still getting to know Formula E. But I think really from a fan’s perspective, through the entertainment and engaging and driving fans to come to our events for more than just motorsport, it has been really great. And also from a VIP perspective with celebrities and influencers, and we’ve had celebrity chefs in our Emotion Club hospitality.

“The beauty of our hospitality experience is that you’re mixing with those CEOs, celebs and influencers within that same space. So it really feels quite interactive and engaging. And that has only just grown year on year.”

Lingley and her team expect the two races in Jeddah to be the biggest of the Formula E calendar, as they were in Diriyah.

She said: “I think for us, the Saudi Arabia event for VIP hospitality is definitely our largest out of the calendar season. For context, that’s 3,500 guests in our Emotion Club as opposed to 1,000 we have in most other markets. So I think that really shows that level of engagement and excitement there. Jeddah Corniche Circuit I think will help facilitate that scale of guest attendance and help us grow it for future seasons as well.

“I think that with our ambitions to grow the entertainment program, and the fan-focused experiences also, it’s a fantastic venue that’s only going to help us (improve) that as well.”

The larger Jeddah crowds can expect plenty of post-race entertainment, as attendees in recent years have experienced.

Lingley added: “I think our concerts over the years have equally only grown in popularity and have developed and improved. With the Backstreet Boys, completely iconic, last season, but also Martin Garrix and OneRepublic, amongst many other names we’ve had over the seasons.”

This year, the post-race concerts are to be headlined by Akon and Lil Baby on consecutive nights.

With the Jeddah E-Prix now less than a week away, Lingley and her team are fully focused on another hectic weekend, when all their planning and preparation comes to fruition.

She said: “We’re live on race day. We’re hosting. This is the day that we’re kind of gearing up for.

“It’s not like many departments in the business, which should be ‘feet up’ if everything’s gone well. For us, that is the day where it all comes together. So for me, that’s supporting the team with opening the gates on time, ensuring that everything’s prepared, making sure of everyone’s reserved areas.

“The nuances of all of those guest experiences are ironed out in those itineraries for all of the client groups, (including) the behind-the-scenes tours, electric laps, grid procedures.

“We’ve got enough staff and everyone’s briefed well. But to be honest, (race day) is spending a lot of time talking to a lot of people, whether that’s our staff or the guests, our team’s partner sponsors, just making sure everyone’s got all the support they could possibly need. All being well, I spend a lot of time talking, which is not a challenge for me.”

Beyond attendances at events, Lingley says the popularity of Formula E continues to rise globally, thanks to the expansion into new markets, especially in Asia.

She said: “I’ve been in Formula E for 10 years now, just over, so I’ve really seen that curve of engagement and how the championship has grown exponentially.

“It’s truly impressive how it’s grown year on year, and I think despite challenges with COVID-19, for the nature of the business that we were and the age we were as a company, it’s impressive and incredible how much we’ve continued to grow.

“What I see on the hospitality side in particular is that we’ve never had more external engagement to want to get into our events. Historically we’ve always been geared towards our sponsors, championship teams, our partners, because they’re our primary audience.

“But what’s really exciting about season 11 and beyond is just the nature and interest of B2C, B2B, other companies, and just individuals who want to pay to come and have that exclusive experience, and I think that really says everything.”
